The Evolution—And Future—of Litmus Live

Since its inception as The Email Design Conference in 2013, Litmus Live (as it’s now known) has been the event for email marketers all over the globe to get excited about. Including myself! The event is the beating heart of the email community—and that’s just one of the reasons why we feel the need to put the show on every year.

A quick Litmus Live history lesson

Originally, Litmus Live was designed to be an in-person event, where hundreds of email marketers convened in a single city. Over the course of a couple of days, they explored new email marketing techniques, learned from their peers, and made new email friends. However, in the year that shall not be named (it rhymes with venti schmenti), Litmus Live pivoted for the first time to a virtual event where we connected with thousands of marketers across the globe in a way we had never been able to before with the in-person events.

2023 marked the first year we returned to an in-person event since 2019! But we leveled up and introduced the ability for folks to live-stream the event if they couldn’t be there in person, answering a key piece of feedback we receive every year.

In 2023, Litmus Live offered twenty-six sessions over two days, covering everything from email accessibility to career pathing in email marketing, from brands like Salesforce, Zillow, and NBC Universal. We even introduced a whole new audience to one of the most-loved sessions, Live Email Optimization, where Litmus’ own email team shared their suggestions and feedback to audience-submitted emails—live on stage.

While the event went off without a hitch—we did learn an important lesson. Putting on an in-person event while also live-streaming and creating an engaging virtual experience is challenging. We didn’t hit the mark there.

But what we truly love about the virtual experience is just how accessible it is. There’s no travel required. You can be in the comfort of your own home or office. And sweatpants are totally an option.

Jokes aside, we want to make Litmus Live truly an event that all marketers can attend.

Litmus Live will be back

Which brings us to Litmus Live in 2024. It brings me a lot of joy to announce that Litmus Live will indeed be coming back in 2024 as a virtual event that will be absolutely free.

You read that right: Litmus Live registration will not cost you anything this year. You won’t have to book a flight or a hotel room. The only thing you’ll need to book is time in your calendar. And hopefully, that should be easy enough to get buy-in from your boss!

While we’re still ironing out the details—including finalizing those all-important dates—we can tell you we’re aiming for a late September/October timeframe for the event itself.

What does this mean for the future of Litmus Live?

The doors remain firmly open for bringing the email community together again in person, in more ways than one, in 2025. So stay tuned for more details on where Litmus Live will be going.
